Create Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG) using the highest level of research-based evidence available. Evidence-Based clinical Practice Guidelines provide assistance in formulating reliable treatment plans for health problems.

Formulate an evidence-based clinical practice guideline that will be useful in future practice. The CPG should be placed on the discussion board to share your work with your classmates. You will share your information by a PowerPoint presentation for your colleagues to review.

Each student should work on a different topic. Be sure the topic is of interest to you and your future practice. Please read each other‘s selection to be sure you are not selecting a topic another student has chosen. Place your topic selection in the subject line to facilitate your colleagues reading your selection. Faculty will read your selections and insert a thread with approval of the topic or suggestions for some alteration to the topic. Keep the clinical guideline to a narrow topic. For example, depression is too broad—how do you manage depression in the geriatric patient, or a middle-aged diabetic, school age child or adolescent?

The PowerPoint presentation purpose is to share your clinical guideline and indicate to your colleagues where current outcome based research has validated or may change a standardized clinical guideline. The PPT is a summary of your work.

There are now many approved guidelines in the literature and readily available. The purpose of the assignment is not to copy an existing guideline. Rather the purpose is to look at an existing guideline to see if it is current and in agreement with current outcome based research; OR to create a new guideline, based upon current research for a condition that does not have a standardized guideline.

If you use a standardized guideline, use the current outcome based literature to either validate the current guideline or show how new research may change the standard. Evaluate the guideline to determine if it is thorough and complete for the user. Many times the research supports new standards and the published guidelines have not been updated. As a PMHNP you will need to be current with the latest research findings.

Reminders about levels of research evidence: 
Level A: includes Meta analyses of several randomized clinical trials Level B: a large randomized, controlled clinical trial
Level C: includes quasi-experimental studies
Level D: includes qualitative studies
Level E: includes only authority or expert opinion. Use Level A or B if possible, if not possible explains why this level of research was not available.

  1.  Decide on the clinical guideline for formulation:
  • Define the mental health problem
  • Describe in detail the background of the mental health problem
  • List the major and minor defining characteristics of the problem
  • Use voice over technology or links to videos to add depth and interest to the project

 

  1.  Compile research studies on the health problem and select only those studies that provide the highest level of evidence (Level A or B) for the clinical practice guideline.
  • Use research studies from the last 1-3 years if at all possible
  • Students should use at least 3-4 good current studies
  • Base your guidelines on the newest research findings.
  • Evaluate any guideline that is retrieved from a textbook—especially if it is older than 1-2 years because it took 1-3 years to be put into print.
  • The point of the assignment is to help you start using current research findings to develop evidence based guidelines.
  • You can use any good database from the library. Also useful are the government sites and Google Scholar. You will find many good electronic sites.

 

  1.  The Clinical Practice Guideline should provide a protocol for the clinician to:
  • Formulate plans of care for one typical patient condition you are likely to encounter in practice. Include medications and/or treatments used to ameliorate the clinical problem.
  • Guidelines for follow-up monitoring and/or follow-up care that is or may become necessary. State outcome criteria for the condition.
  • Rationale for recommendations. Indicate in the guideline where the most recent studies have impacted the guideline.

 

  1. Provide a comprehensive reference list on the guideline in APA format.

Develop a power point presentation for your peers to view and be able to provide comments. Post the presentation on the Discussion Board under this topic.
