Introduction of Community

This assignment will observe the community of Miami, Florida. The population of this city is ethnically diverse as it has a high percentage of Black and Hispanic (Latino) residents (Statistical Atlas, 2018). The residential area of Naranja is a suburb of Miami with racial diversity and a high number of young adults and children.

Vitality

People in the community are visible. They actively participate in the city life, work, and go to school. The main age groups of people in this neighborhood are children younger than 10 years and adults from 25 to 35 years (Statistical Atlas, 2018). The area has a lower population of older people and young adults. The most common ethnicity is Hispanic (Latino). There are also many African-Americans living in the neighborhood. Some residents appear healthy and well-nourished. Many people are overweight. There are many young children and families.

Indicators of social and economic conditions

Some houses appear to be in poor condition. People live in homes and public housing facilities. Some living complexes have obvious repayment issues. Public transportation is available in the area. There are adequately furnished bus stops. People also use cars. There are not many alternative ways of transportation such as bicycles. There are some small businesses available for job-seeking residents. However, the rate of unemployed people is high in the region, which is indicated by homeless people residing on the streets. The area is urban, and it has multiple public schools available for children.

Health Resources

The area does not have any hospitals, but some are situated near it. It is clear that it is a problem for people as they do not have any community health centers in the walking distance from their homes. People have to drive or take public transportation to arrive at hospitals and other medical establishments. Naranja’s community health care center offers some types of primary care, pediatrics, and other services.

Environmental conditions related to health

Public housing is in need of repair. The sanitary conditions appear to be tolerable although there is some trash on the streets. Traffic lights and sidewalks are present throughout the area. At night, parts of the neighborhood are poorly lit. There is no handicapped access to most buildings. The district has some daycare facilities and centers, which are used by the residents frequently. Children play in different parts of the neighborhood, including streets and yards. People are seen eating street food. Some stray animals are present in the area.

Social functioning

There are many young women with children seen on the streets. Females seem to care for children. Some families are also present, both women and men engage in child supervision. Young families are more prevalent in the area than older ones. Community cohesiveness is not defined. It is possible to assume that such social problems as substance abuse and violence are present in the neighborhood.

Attitude toward healthcare

There is a lack of health resources available in the area. The primary community health center offers some senior programs and wellness initiatives. Some advertisements for tobacco cessation, nutrition, physical activity, and other types of health education can be seen on the streets. The observed resources may be underutilized.

Vulnerable population

A vulnerable population identified in this survey is represented by young adults and adolescents. Many people of these age groups suffer from tobacco abuse. Youth tobacco use is high in the region (Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade, 2018). Residents’ appearance also shows some additional health problems such as poor nutrition and aggressive behavior.

Conclusion

The community of Naranja is highly diverse, although the economic conditions of the region are somewhat inadequate. People may suffer from poor nutrition and a lack of preventive healthcare initiatives. Adolescents and young adults may have problems with substance abuse, smoking, and malnutrition.
