A thesis-support essay is a basic essay that has an introduction-body-conclusion structure, a thesis assertion, and topic sentences and units of support to explain the thesis assertion. You can see the expectations for a thesis-support essay in the image showing Basic Essay Structure.
Please do NOT include research in this essay. Since you’re writing about a topic you’re interested in, you should be able to develop your own supporting ideas, explanations, and details. You should end up with a 3-4 page draft. (Double-spaced, Times New Roman 12 pt.)
Although this assignment is graded, it’s graded based on whether you complete it fully, thoughtfully, and on time. Because writing doesn’t happen all at once, the purpose of this assignment is to get instructor feedback intended to help you develop the draft into a more final essay, which you’ll submit at the end of Week 5.
How to Proceed
Use the working thesis sentence you posted in Module 1.
Know that if your thesis shifted a bit as you started to think and write more fully to support your assertion, that’s o.k. All writers tweak as they go. That’s why it’s called a working thesis.
You may want to create an outline or you may want to list out your topic sentence ideas. It’s useful to identify the main ideas that will support the assertion in your thesis – to have that “skeletal” idea structure before you fill in the details. Note that many writers start with the thesis, topic sentences, and support, and then go back and write the conclusion and introduction later.
Once you have a working draft, set it aside and then review it for the expected characteristics noted in the checklist.
Submit the draft.
