There are six main qualitative research designs, which all serve specific research purposes. The six qualitative research designs include 1) case study, 2) ethnography, 3) phenomenological study 4) grounded theory study, 5) narrative inquiry, and 6) content analysis. For this discussion, you will find similarities and differences among the six designs, as well as determine which design approach may be suitable for your selected topic. As you learn about the six qualitative research designs, think about how you could potentially use one or more of these designs to conduct your own study based on your selected topic from Week 1.

Prior to beginning work on this discussion,

  • Read Chapter 8 of the textbook.
  • Choose three of these six qualitative research designs you are most interested in exploring regarding your topic.

Research studies are the cornerstone of education and learning. Through research studies, people have been able to generate new knowledge and give credence to their hypothesis. Research also offers students the opportunity to learn using scientific methods. Broadly, there are two types of research; quantitative, the type of research based on collection and analysis of numerical data (Barclay et al., 2017). qualitative research is focused on the collection of data through informal and open-ended communication. Qualitative research is also categorized into different categories bases on the technique employed and the purpose of the study. The six types of qualitative analysis include case study, ethnography research, narrative enquiry, content analysis, phenomenological study, and grounded theories.

The similarity between these six research studies is that they all gather multiple forms of data such as documents, observation, and interviews rather than relying on a single source of data. Secondly, all the research studies take a holistic perspective on research, and they all analyze all the essential data types in research. Lastly, the inductive enquiry is another similarity that gives a researcher engaging in qualitative analysis to immerse themselves in the study group.

The most significant difference between the six types of qualitative research studies lies in their focus and intent. For example, whereas case study research focuses on uncovering the tacit knowledge of cultural participants, an ethnography study will describe the nature of phenomena through a deeper analysis of individual cases. In my research study, I would wish to utilize a case study since it gives individuals the opportunity to interact with their respondents.

Your reasoning for choosing case studies for your research topic was that you would be able to interact with the participants as the researcher, however all of the different qualitative research methodologies allow for data collection that can include interaction with the participants that’s not something that is specific to case studies. I recommend that you review the different research methodologies to make sure that you understand the differences between them. This is something that you will need to understand and make use of over the course of this class, so it is important for you to gain a clearer understanding of the differences between the six different qualitative methodologies.

Topic : It is important to be able to locate the specific components that make up a research study or article in order to determine if the components are in alignment. “Alignment” here means that the components fit together and tightly address a particular issue, situation, or problem. For this discussion, you will find an article, dissertation, or ADP that describes a qualitative case study, and discuss how its issue, purpose statement, and research questions are all in alignment.


It is a requirement that research studies should follow a specific format that describes the problem or issue to be addressed by the researcher, a purpose statement and formulate a research question to offer guideline throughout the study. The article will examine a qualitative research study by establishing the problem or issues addressed by the survey and determining its purpose statement and its research question. Then lastly, determine how each component is in alignment with the other.

Robert et al. (2020), in their research titled, “Access to specialist community alcohol treatment in England, and the relationship with alcohol-related hospital admissions: qualitative study of service users, service providers and service commissioners,” the researchers sought to establish the perceived barriers to access specialized treatment and the reasons supporting the increased hospitalization of alcohol-related problems; which is also the purpose statement of the research. The problem that the study sought to address is the increased number of hospitalizations based on alcohol-relatedissues. In contrast, it is not easy to get specialized treatment for patients seeking help before their problem escalate. Although the research question is not expressly stating in the researchbased on the information provided, the research question is, “Why is there an increase in hospitalization of alcohol-relatedand a decrease in patients seeking specialized treatment?”

Keenly examining the structure and component of this research study, it is essential to state that all the elements align with each other since they are formulated so that the problem statement supports the research question. They both form the basis for the purpose statement of the study.
