Chapter 3 Assignment

Your name here

Write a short introduction paragraph that describes your study (qualitative, quantitative, mixed method, etc.) with a shortened version of your purpose statement. Remind your readers what the focus of your study is, especially theresearch aims. You can also briefly mention how you’ll structure the chapter. This will help orient the reader and provide a bit of a roadmap so that they know what to expect(the research methodology that will be implemented during the study, the data collection, etc.). Remember, this is written in future tense because you are still proposing the study.

Research Design

You should be able to cover this introductory section of your design in one paragraph. In this paragraph, you will present decisions you have been making from Spickard’s 6-step model (probably should have a citation from him in this chapter, yes?). First, refer back to Chapter 2 of our textbook, in which he said in Step 2, the research questionsyou ask will tellyou what type of data you need, and the type of data you need determines the logical structure of your research. The majority of you will likely conductcorrelational research or descriptive research. This should lead you to Step 3 of Spickard’s model, and you can describe the type of data you will collect and how you will collect it (Step 4). This paragraph should have simple descriptions with specific details to follow under other headings.

Under this heading, you will tell your reader about your data collection instrument – some refer to this as a questionnaire or survey. You should assign an Appendix letter (A, B, C, etc.) and mention that it appears at the end of the chapter. In your description of the instrument, you need to break out each section (one for demographic variables, one for a scale measuring employee motivation, and one for a scale measuring relationship with supervisor) using Level 3 headings.

Demographic Variables.Survey questions on demographic variables will provide you additional opportunities to analyze the data, so you should consider adding several options to your instrument such as age, gender, marital status, employment tenure, education level, etc.

Occupational Self-Efficacy Scale. This is an example of a pre-existing instrument created by another author that has been tested through their research study. You would need to include the number of items on the scale and if formatted with Likert-type questions, include a definition of what each point value represents (1=strongly disagree). Be sure to include a citation for the author(s) that created the scale and the original Cronbach’s alpha score that demonstrates the scale is reliable.

Job Satisfaction Scale. If you attempt to create your own instrument, you will need to discuss how you will measure validity and reliability.

Use this section to describe how many individuals will be invited to participate and how they were selected/identified for your study. Oftentimes you will not gain access to a truly random sample sampling. Instead you will likely select participants based on ease of access (this is called a convenience sample). If you are using employees from one organization, use descriptive language without revealing the name of the organization.

Data Collection Process

This will seem like a short repeat of the Instrumentation section, but it really should be about how you build and distribute your instrument. Your instructor requires that you use the software package (Qualtrics) provided by ISU to buildyour instrument online and then you decide how to distribute it – via email, for example. Also consider how long you will give participants to complete the instrument and if/when you will follow-up with the participants before you close out the study (to potentially increase participation). If you are using a different format than email to distribute your instrument, you will explain that here (social media, in-person distribution at the end of training, etc.).

Data Analysis

It isimportant to discuss how you will prepare your data for analysis, which statistical calculation(s) you will perform, and the software you will use. For example, quantitative data will often require some initial preparation such as removing duplicates or incomplete responses. As always, remember to state both what you did and why you did it. Most of you will be using descriptive statistics such as mean comparisonand will useExcel. However, you may choose to examine correlation coefficients, so you will need to use the statistical software package SPSS.
